Step into the dynamic world of actor-musicians in this new masterclass led by Co-Artistic Director Victoria Falconer. Along with Drew Livingston (My Brilliant Career) and Alec Steedman (Bright Star, Silver Tongue), this practical session will bridge the gap between the script and the sheet music.
You will get the opportunity to learn about the unique mechanics of the actor-muso form, discovering how your musical instrument can expand your character and enhance your storytelling.
In this masterclass you’ll explore:
- Dual mindset: Balancing the technical precision of a musician with the theatrical instinct of an actor to create exciting performances.
- Staging and movement: approaching the physical logistics of moving through choreo and staging whilst playing an instrument live on stage.
- Ensemble chemistry: Working collaboratively with other performers, how to keep listening to one another, and learning to drive the narrative as a collective.
Whether you are a performer looking to lean into your multi-threat skills or meet fellow multidisciplinary artists, or a theatre maker/writer/director looking to incorporate music and utilise unique staging in your next project, this masterclass will elevate your craft and understanding of this growing form. A base level of instrument skill (approx. grade 5 AMEB or equivalent, or five years playing at least one instrument) is ideal, but get in touch if you have queries.

What do I need to prepare?
We will send out further info closer to the date, including a simple piece of music with which to familiarise yourself. Please note, you will not be expected to sight-read anything for this workshop, however there will be an opportunity for those who have brought an instrument to join in with an improvised jam!

Is there a limit to the kind of instrument you can bring?
Any instrument that you can pick up and play while moving (in a traditional or non-traditional fashion) is welcome, and there will be a piano and/or keyboard for people to play as well.

Yes, this is a practical masterclass where there will be light exercises and opportunities to perform with our masterclass teachers and participants.

Is the venue accessible?
Hayes Theatre Co is accessible to everyone. We encourage all customers with access requirements to get in touch with us so we can discuss your requirements. Our theatre includes road-to-stage step-free access, and we have several dedicated accessible seating areas.
A lift operates from the theatre entrance to the foyer and entry to the auditorium is via the side door located off the balcony for those who have difficulty managing stairs. Please speak to the Box Office Assistant upon arrival at your performance to arrange access. Our staff and volunteer crew will assist in navigating these access points.

Are there restrooms available on-site?
Yes, we have multiple restrooms on-site! At Hayes we welcome gender diversity and encourage everyone to use the restroom that best fits your gender identity or expression.
There is one accessible toilet on the foyer level. There are also two ambulant toilets located within the male and female bathrooms.

Is there parking available?
Discount parking is available from the Kings Cross Parking Station (entrance on Ward Avenue). Bring your parking ticket with you to the theatre and have it validated at our Box Office for $18 parking. Further discounts apply for parking after 6pm or on weekends.
Limited 1 hour (free after 5 pm) street parking is available around the area. Please note the parking signs as to restrictions.
