Hayes Theatre Co is passionate about new musicals. We want to see more of our stories on stage – stories that matter, stories that entertain, challenge and enrich us. We also know that it isn’t easy and that there’s no simple way to bring even the most promising idea to life.
SHOWLAB is an educational initiative from HAYES CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT, where aspiring writers and composers present an excerpt from their musical to a committee of industry professionals and receive feedback on their work.
SHOWLAB is a full day dedicated to musical theatre writing and composition. All participants are present for the other presentations and feedback seasons with up to 12 musicals presented on the day.
Who is eligible?
Anyone at all. Your musical does not need to be finished or completed for you to present, nor do you need to have written a musical before. There’s no cost to be involved. We do receive many more submissions than we can support however, so there’s no guarantee of a place on the day.
What should I present?
Each participant presents up to 10 minutes of their work, which could incorporate a brief overview or synopsis, musical numbers (with or without lyrics) or dialogue scenes. Remember that this is not a pitch session or competition, we want to focus on the work itself.
Will my musical be programmed by Hayes?
SHOWLAB is designed to provide advice to emerging writers and composers. If you’d like to apply for development assistance or submit your work for consideration by our Programming Committee you need to apply to our Open Submissions Program separately.
How do I apply to the program?
Please send a one-page submission outlining your work and the vision you have for your musical. Please include information on the writers in the form of a short bio. Please also indicate what you might present on the day and how you’d like to present it.
Email your submission to email@example.com
Submissions close Monday 23 March
Successful applicants will be notified by Monday 30 March
