Hayes Vocational Program

We’re thrilled to introduce the first three participants in the Hayes Vocational Program, supported by The Russell Mills Foundation. The program offers paid, credited creative positions on Hayes productions as well as vocational training.

Kate Baldwin, Bernadette Fam and Keerthi Subramanyam will join the creative team on Young Frankenstein to help bring our spectacular musical to life.  Kate will be working with Trent Suidgeest as Lighting Design Assistant, Bernadette will be working with Alex Berlage as Directorial Assistant and Keerthi Subramanyam will work across Set and Costume Design with Isabel Hudson and Mason Browne.

The Hayes Vocational Program is designed to assist emerging creatives expand their practice and develop their skills in a professional environment. We look forward to the contribution they’ll make to our production of Young Frankenstein, but also to everything they’ll bring to the industry in years to come.

Kate Baldwin

Kate Baldwin is an emerging Asian-Australian Lighting Designer.
In 2019, she lighting designed for House on Boundary Road, Liverpool(directed by Jess Arthur), completed a Secondment with Paul Jackson on Beauty Queen of Leenane (directed by Paige Rattray), and designed for Blue Christmas – a double bill at KXT with the Ignite Collective.  She has now completed her Technical Theatre BFA at NIDA and is excited to continue working on new Australian and CALD work – she is committed to working with companies that are openly working towards antiracism. Kate is excited to see how the industry begins to tackle the lack of BIPOC representation and opportunity. 

Bernadette Fam

Bernadette is a multidisciplinary artist working across theatre making, directing, writing, dramaturge and creative producing.
As an artist, Bernadette is passionate about exploring the intricacies of identity, belonging and cultural connection in Australia’s current socio-economic landscape. Her recent credits include:  directing the Youth Artist Ensemble for Q Theatre, assistant directing Lady Tabouli (National Theatre of Parramatta/Sydney Festival), Mother (Commission for the Annual Youth Theatre Festival – Q Theatre), Fight or Flight (Intersection: Beat – ATYP) and 
tutajهناك (here/there) (BATCH 2020/Green Door Theatre Company).  She is currently undertaking a dramaturge mentorship underneath Jane Fitzgerald and was awarded the 2019 Create NSW Young Creative Leaders Fellowship. Bernadette is the Artist in Residence at PYT, Fairfield and the Associate Creative Producer of Green Door Theatre Company.

Keerthi Subramanyam

Keerthi Subramanyam is a set and costume designer for film and theatre.
Keerthi’s passion for storytelling and creating emotive experiences led her to designing for the performing arts.

Keerthi has worked on theatre shows including The House at Boundary Road Liverpool and Flora, designed for a collaborative short film called Alienated and co-designed a music video for Blue Velvet as part of Triple J Unearthed in 2019.  In 2020, Keerthi worked as a production designer on a short film called Groundhog Night and a music video called Quiet Australian and is currently working on various projects across film, theatre and opera.
