Phar Lap
Concert Presentation
Book, Music and Lyrics by Steven Kramer
A rags-to-riches story with a horse-sized heart, Phar Lap: The Musical is an absurdist electro-swing musical comedy. No horse costumes, no puppets – just a dapperly-dressed actor donning the name and persona of the beloved Australian racehorse.
Unfolding in the vein of a classic sports movie (complete with dramatic training montage), the awkward teenager from New Zealand meets down-on-his-luck trainer Harry Telford, who helps him become a mega-athlete and an Australian champion. The road isn’t easy – there are gambling scandals, double-crosses, an attempted shooting, and a career-threatening addiction to sugar. It’s high stakes, high drama, and highly historically accurate.*
Phar Lap boasts an irresistible electro-swing score, with inspirations from 1930s jazz to Rogue Traders. Brassy, lively, retro, but with electronic drums and dance-floor energy – think Tim Minchin multiplied by Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, and you’re starting to get the idea.
Director Sheridan Harbridge
This is a script-in-hand presentation of the show’s current draft, with actors performing at mic stands. All performances of musicals during Hayes’s Festival of New Work are presentations, with no set or costumes, choreography, etc. The writer and/or composer will introduce the work at the start of the event.
